Arthroscopic rotator cuff

Shoulder pain at night in bed? Can’t throw, reach or even put on a coat without pain? A small, sharp bone spur grinding away at the smooth tendons of your rotator cuff is the likely  cause. Get rid of the spur, the tear and the pain in a morning. Three-bandaid surgery  done through the arthroscope. Dr. Scott Haig pioneered the development of this technique and has performed thousands.

Arthroscopic Repair for Instability: Coming out of the socket, partially or completely, the unstable shoulder is repaired with arthroscopic surgery. Reliably and nearly painlessly putting you back into the sports and activities you now must avoid.

Shoulder Replacement:  Grinding bone on bone, the pain worsening stiffness of shoulder arthritis shouldn’t  be something you put up with. Dr. Haig has been doing his shoulder replacements  on an outpatient basis for many patients. It is open surgery but with block anesthesia patients are very comfortable, many going through the entire process without narcotics.

Sports Medicine

Sports Medicine | Scott Haig

Arthroscopic Knee Procedures: A loose particle of bone or a torn meniscus produces the common symptoms of knee pain, clicking, locking and instability. Arthroscopic surgery, an incision smaller than a grain of rice, gets rid of those symptoms in less than half an hour.  Dr. Haig has performed many thousands of arthroscopic knee surgeries on patients ranging from seniors to college and professional athletes.

ACL:  The major ligament in the center of the knee, your ACL only gets  noticed when it’s torn. A wobble when turning, buckling, collapsing, a knee that’s just not there for you when you need stability—these are the symptoms of an ACL tear.   A one hour, outpatient procedure with very little post-op discomfort takes care of it. Don’t risk the falls, and the arthritis, associated with ACL tears.  Dr. Haig pioneered (and strongly recommends) the Allograft ACL reconstruction for most patients.

Ankle Injuries:  When you have had one ankle sprain too many it’s time to think about a stabilization procedure.  Small incision, arthroscopically aided surgery for the unstable and painful ankle is among Dr. Haig’s specialties in his Sports Medicine practice.

Tennis Elbow: Tennis Elbow | NYOS How many people, athletes and non-athletes too, are avoiding  essential activities because their elbows hurt. It’s called epicondylitis, it’s very common and very easy to cure.   Dr. Haig has successfully treated hundreds  of epicondylitis patients—many cured with just one injection, bad cases with a twenty minute, minimally invasive surgical procedure.

PRP Injections: A safe and promising new technology which uses components of the patient’s own blood to treat many sports related tendon problems as well as the more pedestrian problem of plantar fasciitis (heel spur pain). Blood is drawn and prepared with proprietary centrifugation machinery by Dr. Haig in the office. Many of our patients have avoided surgery with complete pain relief via PRP.

Hip replacement and Knee Replacement

Hip Replacement:  Arthritis of the hip produces some of worst, deepest pain we can experience.  Hip replacement surgery, termed arthroplasty,  is among Dr. Haig’s most commonly performed procedures. The modular, uncemented, ceramic, minimally invasive, non-muscle-cutting approach now becoming the industry standard was adopted by Dr. Scottt Haig in the 1980’s when he  joined the practice with his father (Dr. A. Haig, who is widely respected as one of the most prolific hip surgeons in America and among the very first to perform  cemented hip arthoplasty in our country) .  It has been wonderfully  successful, for over two decades a safe and reliable cure for arthritic hip pain.

Knee Replacement:  Dr. Haig utilizes minimally invasive unicompartmental knee replacement whenever possible for his patients whose knee arthritis requires surgery. This approach involves very little disruption of the tissues and ligaments within and around the knee—replacing only the warn, weight-bearing surfaces on the inner side of the knee. Called a “partial” knee replacement, this surgery enjoys great patient acceptance because it is relatively smaller and more comfortable than traditional knee replacement.

When the arthritis involves the whole knee, however, a traditional knee replacement is the best answer. Having done over a thousand knee replacements, Dr.Haig is an acknowledged leader in this field. Beside his technical expertise in performing knee replacement  surgery, Dr. Haig brings his knee patients the benefits of  his enormous  experience with pain control and rehabilitation; he served for many years as the Director of Adult Orthopedics at Helen Hayes Hospital—a world-renowned rehabilitation hospital then affiliated with Columbia University,  where patients from literally around the world came for knee surgery and rehabilitation.

Hand and Wrist Problems

Carpal Tunnel: Wrist pain, tingling and numbness in the fingers, hands go numb on the wheel of a car or using a mouse, wake up and shake your hands because they feel dead? You have carpal tunnel syndrome, a common problem that Dr. Haig cures, forever, using  a 10 minute procedure done under pure, local anesthesia. About as much discomfort having a blood test.  A careful and highly experienced hand surgeon, Dr. Haig has done, literally, thousands of carpal tunnel releases using this safe and accurate technique.  Don’t wait until compression of the nerve produces permanent damage. “Why didn’t I just have this done earlier” is what our patients always say.

Hand and Wrist Problems Scott HaigWrist Tendonitis:  While there are hundreds of reasons for wrist pain, by far most common is a tendonitis on the thumb-side of the wrist. Pain here with manual work, bottle-feeding a baby, holding a suitcase or using a computer is treated regularly in our practice. Dr. Haig usually cures this with an injection and splinting, bad cases respond beautifully to an eight minute, local anesthesia procedure to release the painful tendon from the friction of it’s tight canal.

Basal Joint Arthritis: Pain at the base of the thumb caused by a form of osteoarthritis is common. One of Dr. Haig’s specialties in hand surgery is Interpositional Arthroplasty –an advanced reconstructive procedure he has used to relieve hundreds of people from this painful and disabling condition.

Trigger Finger or Thumb. Pain along the finger when you move it, or snapping open or closed (triggering—you know it if you’ve had it!) is fixed with a shot of local anesthetic and  a minimally invasive release that takes five minutes.  Dr. Haig does trigger finger releases every week and he has for over 23 years.

Hallux Rigidus.  The big toe has trouble moving up, it’s hard to wear heels and there is a painful bump on the top of the first joint. Dr. Haig has utilized the Mann Cheilectomy procedure, a twenty minute operation to remove the spur and get the toe moving normally again, for hundreds of very satisfied patients over many years. This is one of his specialties.

Bunions.  Reconstructive Surgery for painful bunions. Dr. Haig uses many surgical approaches to bunions and toe deformities.  A consultation, and then a frank discussion of surgical and non-surgical alternatives is given to every patient before reconstruction.  Dr. Haig’s long list of happy patients with good looking feet starts, as he says, with never, ever thinking about it as  “just a bunion”.

Fracture Care

Dr. Haig has treated many thousands of fractured bones and our practice is open to you if you or a friend or loved one has suffered an injury.  If you have a broken bone, however, time is of the essence. A great result is most likely when the fracture is treated early. So call as soon as possible and let our staff know there is a fracture so we can arrange of urgent or emergent consultation and care.
